As the game progresses, players will explore the town and make choices that affect the course of the story. With multiple endings and a wide range of characters to interact with, Jake’s Love Story offers a unique and engaging gaming experience. It’s slightly worse than unique routes indeed, but this doesn’t prevent these VNs from being great in my experience, so it’s an acceptable tradeoff.
Visual Novel Spotlight: Sunrider Academy
Don’t get me wrong, the visual novel/dating sim sort of game never really took root in America, it’s a uniquely Japanese genre. The artwork is top notch for all the characters and the backdrops are pretty to look at mostly too. There is only the one kiss CG, which I linked above, but the dialogue has plenty of smooching. The writing is very passable with few grammatical errors and characters each have convincing dialogue. The game as sold by GoG and Steam features censorship obstructing the view of the characters during the h-scenes.

It’s unclear, at times, what effect your actions will have, which is a mark against the game. Yes, it’s good that you can’t reliably find certain girls at certain places over and over, but it also means that you have to guess a bit at what responses a girl wants to hear. You can also try to recruit or boost morale and wind up with no gains, which gets frustrating when you already feel a bit like you’re guessing at what does or doesn’t work. My Girlfriend is a Musician is a unique and captivating music-based game. Players take on the role of a young musician who is in love with a talented singer. Players must help their girlfriend reach her dream of becoming a successful musician by guiding her through the ups and downs of the music industry.
Just Deserts is a top-down action shooter set in a post-apocalyptic world. Players take on the role of a mercenary tasked with eliminating hostile robots and mutants in order to save humanity. The game features a variety of weapons and upgrades to help players complete their mission. As they progress, they will battle through a variety of maps and environments, while collecting power-ups and special items to help them along the way. Just Deserts offers intense, fast-paced action and an immersive storyline that will keep players coming back for more.
There’s also plenty of humour and cute moments to be had, and you can expect the game to hit everything you would expect in a dating sim, from cute dates to awkward situations to weird events to bed. It’s not that they want to write a shallow story, it’s that they can’t. When you don’t know who the player is going to pick, you can’t make any of the girls get too close to him in the main story, which means that any relationship is 100% bound to be shallow. It’s a limit of the waifu choice system where you can’t write an earthshaking, ground breaking romance because it might just be with the « wrong » person. I’ve never tried a dating sim, and I’ve never gone on a date, but from what I understand dating sims are nothing like how actual dating works.
While the game gives you plenty to tackle with its stat system, it relies a bit too much on random number generation that can very easily become annoying for the first few hours of the game. Past that, it settles into something more enjoyable and basically everything you could expect from a waifu simulator. Thankfully, once you make it through four months or so of getting to know the girls enough, you can choose to jump into a route and have events occur a bit more regularly. Keeping yourself and your clubs afloat is still a task, but now you can fully enjoy the ups and downs of your chosen girlfriend.

I’d say that the story is as good as you can expect from a VN/dating sim. Overall, it’s a relaxed, easily absorbed story, no matter which arc you choose. I doubly recommend it if you are a fan of the free Sunrider games and want to see the characters in a very different setting. I was reluctant to put this game on the list, as it caused some commotion upon its release. There is a lot of nudity in it — but unlike most of the other games on this list, the women in this game have atrociously written character development.
Sunrider Academy, one of the best dating sims?

H-Rescue is an exciting and intense game that will test the player’s skills and strategy. Panty Party is a fun, fast-paced party game for up to four players.
Throughout the game, players will explore the school grounds, build relationships with their bird classmates, and uncover the mysteries of the institute. Along the way, they will make choices that will affect the outcomes of the game and their relationships with the birds.
